Icebound

Percussion Ensemble

"Icebound" was my first piece for large percussion ensemble. The piece is based primarily on the pentatonic scale and on open fourths and fifths. As with many of my works, the music for this piece came quite some time before the title. The music’s ethereal, hollow sound, as well as its urgent, driving nature, seemed to call to mind the image of a ship traversing treacherous, icy waters; hence the title, Icebound.
